Juncal Andean Park is a private ecological reserve of 13,796 hectares, created in 1911 by the Kenrick family. Located in the heart of the Juncal Valley, just two hours north-east of Santiago, the park preserves one of the most pristine Andean ecosystems in central Chile.
In May 2010, Juncal Andean Park was designated a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance, joining only 11 other recognized sites in Chile. These wetlands are a vital source of life in the high Andes, supporting a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna in a harsh mountain environment. The park is also home to magnificent glaciers, including the Juncal Glacier, the largest in central Chile, which like many worldwide is slowly receding due to climate change.
Our hike begins at the park entrance, next to the old and abandoned railway line that once crossed the Andes. From here, we follow a gentle trail along the eastern bank of the Juncal River, leading us into the wide Juncal Valley. Surrounded by towering peaks, we will discover an expansive wetland, a true mountain oasis that remains green and full of life year-round thanks to the constant presence of water.
Crossing the “Monos de Agua” river, we continue on a less defined and gradually steeper trail. The path winds through rocky moraines until the glacier suddenly appears in front of us. Standing at the foot of the Juncal Glacier is a moment that perfectly captures the spirit of hiking in the Chilean Andes.
